How to Look Like a Pro Hacker in Front of Non-Techie Friends
Not every "hacking" session needs an exploit. Sometimes you just need green text and a straight face. This is a joke tutorial, so keep your expectations at zero and your drama at maximum.
Warning: the only thing you will compromise here is your friends' sense of reality.
The routine
1. Open Command Prompt.
2. Turn the screen "hacker green":
color a
Instant movie-hacker upgrade. The text goes green and your credibility goes up three levels.
3. Make the terminal scroll dramatically:
dir /s
The screen fills with fast-scrolling text as it lists every file and folder recursively. Looks intense. Is not.
4. Stare at the screen. Seriously. Furrow the brow.
5. Occasionally mutter:
"Hmm... something's off with this system."
6. If someone asks what you are doing:
"Just checking the directory structure."
7. Do not explain further. Mystery is part of the professionalism.
What is actually happening?
No hacking whatsoever. color a just changes the Command Prompt text color to
green, and dir /s simply lists the files in a folder along with its subfolders.
But to someone who does not know, it already looks like you are breaking into the
Pentagon. 😭
The tiny real lesson
Looking like hacking is not hacking. Both commands here are read-only and completely harmless. Real security work is the opposite of this bit: it is methodical, documented, and always authorized. For the version with actual substance, the other posts in Field Notes are a better use of your green text.
